Where it came from
The 5 Euro 'Planet Earth' coin was issued by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2016 as a pilot project for a new denomination in the German collector market. It represented a departure from traditional minting techniques by incorporating a translucent blue polymer ring between the inner core and the outer ring, a technological innovation designed to enhance counterfeit protection and aesthetic appeal.
The coin was designed by a team of artists including Alina Hoyer, who developed the design concept, and Stefanie Radtke, who contributed to the artistic execution. The motif features a representation of Earth from space, surrounded by planets, symbolizing our global connection and the advancement of minting technology. It was met with significant public enthusiasm, leading to long queues at branches of the Bundesbank and establishing the 5 Euro series as a staple of German numismatics.
