Where it came from
The 2011 Austrian 5 Euro coin, commonly known as the Pummerin Bell issue, was released by the Austrian Mint as part of an ongoing series commemorating cultural landmarks and traditions. This specific coin honors the Pummerin, the massive bell housed in the north tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Cast in 1951 from the metal of the original bell destroyed during World War II, the Pummerin serves as a profound symbol of Austrian reconstruction and national resilience.
Designed by Mint engraver Helmut Andexlinger, the coin features a detailed depiction of the bell on the obverse, capturing its ornate relief work and historical weight. The reverse side follows the standard Austrian 5 Euro series layout, incorporating the nine coats of arms of the federal states. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by numismatists for its high-quality minting and its role in preserving the narrative of Vienna's post-war architectural restoration.
