5 Euros (New Year: Operetta Bat and the Ball)

The 2015 Austrian 5 Euro coin, themed 'The Bat and the Ball,' was issued by the Austrian Mint as part of an ongoing series celebrating famous operettas. This particular release commemorates Johann Strauss II’s 'Die Fledermaus,' a quintessential Viennese operetta that remains a staple of the New Year's Eve cultural tradition in Austria. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the country’s rich musical heritage and its historical connection to the grand ballroom culture of the nineteenth century.

Designed by Mint engravers Thomas Pesendorfer and Herbert Wähner, the coin features a detailed relief of dancers in motion, capturing the elegance of the period's ballroom aesthetic. The design focuses on the festive atmosphere of the masked ball central to the operetta's plot, utilizing a nine-sided shape that has become a distinct signature of the Austrian 5 Euro series. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by collectors for its artistic commitment to Austrian cultural iconography and its high-quality minting standards.
