Where it came from
The 2002 5 Euro Schönbrunn Zoo coin was issued by the Austrian Mint to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the world's oldest existing zoo, located within the grounds of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. Released shortly after the introduction of the Euro currency in Austria, this collector coin served as a cultural bridge, highlighting one of the nation's most significant historical and scientific landmarks. It was designed to celebrate the institution's evolution from an imperial menagerie established by Emperor Franz Stephan I in 1752 into a modern center for conservation and zoological research.
The design of the coin features an intricate depiction of the zoo's famous historical architecture alongside various animal motifs, reflecting the blend of Habsburg grandeur and natural history that defines the site. It was produced in a circulating quality and a higher collector grade, aimed at numismatists and visitors interested in Austrian heritage. Upon its release, the coin was well received for its artistic detail and its role in marking a major milestone for one of Vienna's most cherished public spaces.
