Where it came from
The 3 Euro Mauve Stinger coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2024 as the final installment in the twelve-part 'Color-Sights' series. This collection was designed to highlight the fascinating wildlife of the deep sea and the hidden wonders of the ocean floor. Like its predecessors in the series, the coin is minted with a special glow-in-the-dark effect that mimics the bioluminescence of its subject, the Pelagia noctiluca, commonly known as the Mauve Stinger jellyfish.
The design of the coin features an intricate rendering of the jellyfish, emphasizing its long, trailing tentacles and characteristic bell shape. The Austrian Mint selected this creature to conclude the series due to its striking appearance and the unique visual challenge of translating its translucent, radiant qualities into a metal medium. Upon release, the series was well-received by numismatists and natural history enthusiasts for its innovative use of color-printing technology and its accessible, modern approach to commemorative currency.
