Where it came from
The 3 Euro Stony Coral coin was released by the Austrian Mint in 2023 as part of its ongoing 12-part 'Coloring the Creatures' series. This series was designed to highlight the beauty and fragility of endangered species while utilizing innovative color-printing technology that allows the coins to glow in the dark, an aesthetic choice intended to mimic the bioluminescence found in deep-sea habitats.
The design process for this coin involved intricate relief work to capture the complex, porous textures of coral structures. It was received by the numismatic community as a notable example of modern minting techniques, with collectors particularly interested in the intersection of high-quality base metal minting and specialized finishes. Like its predecessors in the series, the coin serves both as legal tender within Austria and as a commemorative piece focused on ecological awareness.
