5 Fen - Guangxu (Pattern; Hu Poo; silver)

The 1903 Hu Poo 5 Fen pattern was produced during the late Qing Dynasty at the Tianjin Mint under the direction of the Board of Revenue, or Hu Poo. This series represented a pivotal transition for the Chinese monetary system, as the imperial government sought to move away from traditional cast copper cash coins and silver sycee in favor of modern, machine-struck coinage modeled after Western decimal systems. The design process was heavily influenced by technical expertise brought in from abroad, resulting in coins that displayed intricate dragon motifs meant to symbolize imperial authority and strength.

These specific patterns were part of an ambitious attempt to centralize currency production across the empire. Designed with high technical precision, the 5 Fen featured a central dragon surrounded by traditional Chinese characters, balanced by English inscriptions to facilitate international trade. Despite their sophisticated design and metallurgical quality, the series was ultimately short-lived due to internal political friction between the central government and provincial mints, as well as broader economic instability in the final years of the Qing period. Consequently, these patterns remained largely experimental and never entered full-scale circulation.
