The 1903 Hu Poo 2 Mace gold pattern coin was commissioned during the final years of the Qing Dynasty, a period marked by significant efforts to modernize China's currency system. Struck at the Tientsin Mint under the authority of the Ministry of Revenue, or 'Hu Poo,' these pieces were intended to replace the traditional sycee silver system with a standardized decimal currency. The design reflects the transitional nature of the era, combining traditional Chinese imperial iconography with Western-influenced minting techniques and technical specifications.

The design was executed under the supervision of government officials aiming to assert national sovereignty through a centralized monetary policy. Featuring the iconic dragon motif synonymous with the Guangxu reign, the coin was intended as a high-value gold standard piece. However, because it was a pattern—an experimental strike rather than a widely circulated coin—it was never issued into general trade. Its rarity today stems from this limited production and the subsequent political instability that prevented the full implementation of the gold-standard coinage program.
