Where it came from
The 5 Euro Waterpower coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2003 as the inaugural piece of the country's celebrated 5 Euro coin series. It was designed to celebrate the history and future of Austrian innovation, specifically focusing on the nation's reliance on hydroelectric power, a vital component of its energy infrastructure. The coin served to reintroduce the public to high-quality commemorative coinage following the transition from the Schilling to the Euro.
Designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, the coin features a composition intended to evoke both the natural force of water and the mechanical elegance of turbine engineering. The obverse depicts a stylized turbine, while the reverse showcases nine provincial shields surrounding the denomination, symbolizing the unity of the Austrian states. It was well received by collectors for its distinct nine-sided shape, which set a precedent for the unique polygonal design language that would define the subsequent releases in the series.
