50 Apsars (Dmitry Gulia)

The 50 Apsars coin featuring Dmitry Gulia was issued in 2024 by the National Bank of Abkhazia as part of their ongoing numismatic commemorative series. This issue honors the prominent Abkhazian writer, poet, and public figure Dmitry Gulia, who is widely regarded as the founder of Abkhazian literature. The coin serves as a cultural artifact intended to preserve the national heritage and celebrate key figures who shaped the Abkhazian linguistic and literary identity.

The design follows the established aesthetic of the Apsar coinage program, which frequently utilizes high-relief portraiture to highlight national icons. These coins are minted primarily for collectors and commemorative purposes rather than general circulation. While the National Bank of Abkhazia oversees these issues to foster institutional pride, they are typically produced in limited quantities at external mints, following a tradition of artistic documentation of the region's historical and intellectual milestones.
