Where it came from
The 500 Tögrög Diplocaulus coin was issued in 2020 as part of the Mongolian 'Paleontology' series, a collection known for its focus on the unique prehistoric fauna discovered within the Gobi Desert. Struck by the Mayer Mint in Germany, this coin features a high-relief representation of the Permian-era amphibian, which is instantly recognizable by its distinctive boomerang-shaped head. This series serves as both a numismatic collectible and a tribute to Mongolia's significant role in global paleontological research.
The design of the coin emphasizes a blend of scientific accuracy and artistic detail, utilizing smartminting technology to achieve the realistic texture of the creature's skin and skeletal structure. By highlighting obscure but scientifically fascinating species like Diplocaulus, the Mint aimed to engage both history enthusiasts and serious numismatists. The coin was well-received upon its release for its unconventional subject matter and high-quality finish, typical of the broader series that balances cultural heritage with innovative minting techniques.
