Where it came from
This 500 Rupee coin was minted in 1993 as part of a commemorative series issued during the reign of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah. Produced by the Nepal Rastra Bank, these coins were created to highlight the unique biodiversity of the Himalayan region, specifically focusing on indigenous wildlife conservation efforts within the kingdom during the late 20th century.
The coin features a detailed relief of the Himalayan black bear, reflecting a design aesthetic common to commemorative numismatics of the era that sought to balance royal heraldry with natural history. These issues were intended both as legal tender and as collector pieces, garnering interest from international numismatists for their artistic depiction of regional fauna rather than traditional monarchical portraiture.
