Where it came from
The 2008 50-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the historic 1983 America's Cup victory by the yacht Australia II. This event remains a seminal moment in Australian sporting history, as it marked the first time a non-American yacht had won the trophy in the 132-year history of the competition, effectively ending the longest winning streak in international sports.
The reverse design features an artistic depiction of the yacht Australia II under sail, incorporating its signature winged keel, which was a technological breakthrough of the era. The obverse features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin was produced as a commemorative circulating issue and served to honor the national pride associated with the achievement of the crew led by skipper John Bertrand.
