Where it came from
Issued by Guernsey in 2016, this commemorative 50 pence coin serves as a tribute to the centenary of the First World War. It specifically honors the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, a monumental structure located in France designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The memorial commemorates the 72,000 British and South African servicemen who died during the Battle of the Somme and have no known graves.
The coin design features a detailed engraving of the iconic arches of the Thiepval Memorial, reflecting the somber and architectural grandeur of the original site. Created as part of a wider numismatic program marking the Great War, it was intended to serve as both a circulating commemorative and a collectible piece. It was met with appreciation by military historians and collectors of commonwealth coinage for its respectful focus on a site of significant collective memory.
