500 Francs CFA (World Cup)

The 1995 500 Francs CFA coin from Benin was issued as part of a commemorative series celebrating the FIFA World Cup. These coins were produced during a period when many nations, particularly those within the CFA franc zone, collaborated with private mints to release thematic legal tender coins intended primarily for the global numismatic market. The designs often focused on international sporting events or cultural heritage to appeal to both casual collectors and those interested in West African commemorative currency.

The design of this issue typically features motifs related to association football, reflecting the global enthusiasm surrounding the sport leading up to the subsequent World Cup tournaments. Like many coins issued under the CFA franc system during the 1990s, the production was handled by external minting facilities that specialized in commemorative numismatics. While these items carry the official status of legal tender in Benin, they were created as collectibles rather than for active circulation in the local economy, and their aesthetic reflects the popular commemorative style of the era.
