Where it came from
The 500 Leva coin was issued by the Bulgarian National Bank in 1996 to commemorate the nation's participation in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where the Bulgarian team achieved a historic fourth-place finish. This era of Bulgarian numismatics was marked by a shift toward celebrating sports achievements and cultural milestones to foster national pride following the country's post-communist transition.
Designed by artists commissioned by the Bulgarian Mint, the coin features a stylistic depiction of two footballers in motion, capturing the athleticism and spirit of the tournament. The design emphasizes the dynamic nature of the sport, reflecting a period when international athletic success served as a rare and significant vehicle for Bulgarian visibility on the global stage.
