Where it came from
Issued in 2020 by the National Bank of Cambodia, this 5000 Riel banknote commemorates the enduring diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between Cambodia and Japan. The note was produced as part of a series marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, serving as a functional piece of currency that simultaneously functions as a symbol of bilateral cooperation and mutual heritage.
The design prominently features the iconic Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of Japanese wooden architecture, displayed alongside the Royal Palace of Cambodia. The inclusion of these architectural landmarks reflects a deliberate effort to emphasize historical legacy and national pride. The design was received as a thoughtful gesture of international friendship, balancing intricate security features with artistic motifs that celebrate the shared history and architectural aesthetics of both nations.
