500 Afghanis (1998 FIFA World Cup France)

This 500 Afghanis coin was issued by the Da Afghanistan Bank in 1996 to commemorate the upcoming 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. During this period, the nation was experiencing significant political instability and economic isolation, making the production of specialized commemorative coinage a notable departure from standard circulation currency. These pieces were often minted in limited quantities for the numismatic market to generate interest among international collectors.

The design features traditional national motifs paired with sporting imagery representative of the global reach of the World Cup. Such commemorative issues were typical of state-sanctioned minting programs intended to increase national prestige or secure foreign currency reserves. Because of the turbulent conditions within Afghanistan at the time, records concerning the specific designers or the intended distribution channels for these coins remain sparse, leading many to view them as intriguing artifacts of a brief effort to maintain cultural and international engagement through numismatics.
