Where it came from
The 1910 Australian Florin holds a distinct place in numismatic history as the first florin minted for the Commonwealth of Australia. Following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1909, the young nation sought to establish a currency system distinct from that of Great Britain, leading to the commissioning of new designs for silver coinage that symbolized Australia's newfound sovereignty.
The design features the portrait of King Edward VII on the obverse, a continuation of the imperial imagery common to British territories at the time. The reverse displays the Australian coat of arms, designed by William Henry James Blakemore, which prominently features the kangaroo and emu. While the design was intended to foster national identity, it was only produced for a single year before the transition to the reign of King George V, making it a sought-after milestone for collectors of early Australian decimal currency.
