Where it came from
The 2015 70-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. This issue formed part of a larger, multi-year program dedicated to the Anzac Centenary, which sought to honor the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealander personnel during the First World War. The denomination of 70 cents was unique to this commemorative set, released as a non-circulating legal tender piece for collectors.
The reverse design features a poignant illustration of a soldier in the slouch hat, silhouetted against a rising sun motif, capturing the solemnity of the occasion. The obverse displays Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which had been the standard portrait on Australian currency for over a decade at the time of issue. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by the numismatic community as a respectful tribute, noted for its thematic connection to national heritage and its role in marking the significant 1915–2015 anniversary.
