Where it came from
The Australian Kookaburra silver coin series was inaugurated by the Perth Mint in 1990, marking Australia's entry into the competitive bullion market. Struck in .999 fine silver, the series is renowned for its annual change in reverse design, which features the kookaburra, a bird iconic to the Australian bush. The 1999 issue features a design by artist Elise Martinson, who depicted the bird perched on a branch, emphasizing the mint's commitment to high-relief artistry and crisp, frost-like finishes that distinguish these pieces from standard circulating currency.
This specific issue bears the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Introduced on Australian coinage in 1999, the portrait was intended to provide a more mature and realistic depiction of the monarch, replacing the previous Raphael Maklouf design. The coin was produced for both bullion investors and the growing numismatic market, balancing legal tender status with its appeal as a collectible piece of Australian natural history.
