Where it came from
The 2003 Australian 20-cent Volunteers coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the International Year of Volunteers. Struck in fine silver with a proof finish, this commemorative piece was designed to honor the significant social and economic contributions made by volunteer organizations across Australia, highlighting the spirit of community service that defines much of the nation's civic life.
The reverse design, crafted by artist Vladimir Gottwald, features a stylized representation of various volunteers engaged in community work, framed by a circular motif. As part of the Royal Australian Mint’s commitment to numismatic quality, the coin features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obverse. It was well-received by collectors for its symbolic tribute to grassroots humanitarian efforts and its high-standard proof striking.
