Where it came from
The 2016 8 Dollars Year of the Monkey coin was issued by the Perth Mint as part of its Lunar Series II program. Struck in 2 ounces of 99.99% pure silver, this specific issue was designed to celebrate the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. The Australian Lunar Series has long been celebrated by collectors for blending Western minting precision with traditional Eastern iconography, making it a staple of the global numismatic market since its inception.
The reverse of the coin features an intricate depiction of the Monkey King, a central figure from the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West, shown perched in a peach tree. The design was crafted to symbolize longevity and good fortune, themes deeply associated with the monkey in Chinese culture. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, maintaining the standard design consistency expected of Australian legal tender coins from this period.
