Where it came from
The 2017 50 Dollar coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the anniversary of the end of the Second World War in the Pacific. It serves as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of the Australian Armed Forces during the conflict, particularly focusing on the momentous victory achieved in 1945. These high-denomination coins are typically produced as collector-focused numismatic pieces, often utilizing precious metals to create a lasting memorial of historical events.
The design features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obverse, a standard portrait used on Australian currency for many years. The reverse imagery is crafted to honor the spirit of the victory, incorporating symbolic motifs related to the Pacific theatre. As a commemorative issue, it was intended for collectors and veterans' families, receiving attention for its detailed engraving and its role in the broader series of Australian military remembrance coinage.
