The 1916 Australian halfpenny mule is a renowned numismatic error that occurred during the First World War. Due to wartime shipping disruptions, the Royal Mint in London faced challenges supplying Australian coinage, leading to the use of a standard George V halfpenny reverse paired inadvertently with the obverse die intended for the Indian quarter anna. Both coins were produced at the Calcutta Mint, and the identical diameter of the two pieces allowed the mismatched dies to be struck together by mistake.
