Where it came from
Action Comics Weekly #606, published in 1988, represents a transitional experiment for DC Comics. During this period, the publisher opted to transform their flagship title, Action Comics, into a weekly anthology format to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Superman. This shift departed from the traditional monthly single-narrative structure, instead offering serialized chapters for various characters including Green Lantern, Blackhawk, and Deadman.
The issue features cover art by Brian Bolland, whose work was highly regarded for its meticulous detail and atmospheric intensity. The editorial intent behind this format was to revitalize interest in DC's broader pantheon of heroes by providing shorter, punchy installments. While the experiment was bold, the weekly format eventually proved logistically challenging, leading the series to return to its monthly roots and the Superman-centric focus that defined its long-standing legacy.
