Action Comics Weekly #623

Published in 1988, Action Comics Weekly #623 represents a distinct period in DC Comics history when the flagship title briefly transitioned from a monthly format to a weekly anthology series. This shift was designed to revitalize the brand by featuring rotating stories centered on various characters including Green Lantern, Blackhawk, and Deadman. The weekly format was an experimental attempt to keep pace with the evolving direct market and maintain high-frequency engagement with readers who were growing accustomed to more serialized, short-form storytelling.

The issue featured cover art by Kevin Maguire, who was highly regarded for his expressive, character-driven style during the late 1980s. The interior content adhered to the anthology's multi-character structure, showcasing scripts and art from a collaborative roster of creators typical of the era's editorial house style. While the experiment ultimately concluded with the series returning to a monthly schedule, issues from this run remain notable artifacts of a unique editorial strategy that prioritized diverse narrative spotlights over the traditional solo-hero focus of the Golden and Silver Ages.
