Alice on Border Road #1

Alice on Border Road, written by Haro Aso and illustrated by Takayoshi Kuroda, debuted in 2015 as a spin-off to the popular survival-thriller series Alice in Borderland. Set within the same dystopian universe where players are forced into lethal games, the series shifts the perspective to a group of young women navigating a desolate, transformed Tokyo. The narrative explores themes of isolation and the breakdown of social structures, attempting to provide a distinct, character-driven survival experience compared to the high-stakes puzzle-solving of its predecessor.

The character designs and visual tone were crafted to emphasize a sense of melancholic realism amidst the surreal brutality of the setting. Upon its release, the series was noted for its departure from the male-led protagonist tropes of the original work, focusing instead on the psychological dynamics between a diverse group of survivors. Critics generally received the work as a complementary piece that expanded the world-building of the Borderland franchise, praised for its atmospheric tension and its commitment to the grim, existential aesthetic established in the primary series.
