Altered States: Warlords #3

Altered States: Warlords was released in the mid-1990s as part of a trend of independent, mature-themed science fiction and fantasy comics. Published by Continuity Comics, the series was designed to explore themes of transhumanism and dystopian conflict, aligning with the publisher's penchant for high-concept, visually aggressive storytelling. This third issue serves as a bridge in the narrative, continuing the arc established by creators who sought to capitalize on the era's fascination with gritty, character-driven serialized fiction.

The visual direction of the series was heavily influenced by the aesthetic sensibilities of Neal Adams' studio, which prioritized dynamic layouts and intense, cinematic framing. While the series was aimed at a niche demographic of collectors looking for alternatives to mainstream superhero titles, it has since become a point of interest for those documenting the transition of the comic book industry during the speculative boom of the 1990s. Its reception was largely defined by its stylistic ambition, which aimed to set it apart from the more traditional titles dominating the shelf at the time.
