Where it came from
American Flagg! #13 was published in 1984 as part of the satirical science fiction series created by Howard Chaykin for First Comics. The series was set in a dystopian 21st-century America where the government had relocated to Mars, leaving a consumerist corporate hellscape behind. This specific issue continued the intricate, dense narrative of Reuben Flagg, a former television star turned Plexus Ranger, as he navigated the violent political intrigue of a fractured Chicago.
The design of the series was revolutionary for the comic industry, utilizing Chaykin’s signature blend of cinematic panel layouts, heavy use of text-heavy world-building, and provocative imagery. Chaykin aimed to critique the intersection of media, politics, and rampant consumerism, a theme that resonated deeply with the mid-eighties cultural landscape. The series was highly acclaimed upon its release for its mature, uncompromising tone and its innovative approach to visual storytelling, which influenced a generation of comic book creators who sought to push the medium beyond superhero tropes.
