Where it came from
American Flagg! #7 was released in 1984 as part of the satirical science fiction series created by Howard Chaykin for First Comics. The series was born out of the early 1980s alternative comics movement, offering a cynical, neon-soaked vision of a near-future America controlled by corporate interests and media conglomerates. As the series progressed into its first year, issue #7 continued to develop the complex sociopolitical landscape of the Plex, the massive residential structure where the protagonist, Reuben Flagg, operates as a Plexus Ranger.
The aesthetic of American Flagg! was revolutionary for its time, characterized by Chaykin's dense, cinematic layouts and a bold, graphic approach to storytelling that utilized heavy line work and futuristic design elements. Chaykin aimed to blend traditional adventure tropes with sharp cultural commentary, resulting in a work that was widely praised by critics and peers for its innovative narrative structure. It is frequently cited as a major influence on the transition of American comics toward more mature, auteur-driven themes in the decade that followed.
