Where it came from
American Freak: A Tale of the Un-Men was a five-issue limited series published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in 1994. The series was created by writer Grant Morrison and artist Philip Bond, emerging during a period when Vertigo was actively expanding the boundaries of horror and dark fantasy within the DC landscape. The story centers on a former government agent tracking a group of genetically altered human experiments, reflecting the era's fascination with body horror and cynical, paranoid thrillers.
The visual identity of the series was defined by Philip Bond’s distinctively angular and expressive line work, which complemented Morrison’s dense, surrealist narrative style. The second issue continues the series' exploration of identity and monstrous evolution, garnering moderate acclaim among fans of the Vertigo house style for its subversive take on the superhero-adjacent tropes prevalent in the 1990s comics market.
