Animal Man #20

Animal Man #20, published in February 1990, serves as a pivotal installment in Grant Morrison's acclaimed run on the series. By this stage in the narrative, Morrison had pushed the boundaries of the medium by frequently incorporating meta-fictional elements, culminating in a story where Buddy Baker begins to question the nature of his own reality and his existence as a comic book character.

The issue features cover art and interior illustration by Chas Truog and Doug Hazlewood, who maintained a grounded, naturalistic aesthetic that stood in stark contrast to the surreal, often metaphysical subject matter Morrison scripted. The creative team aimed to ground the escalating existential dread of the protagonist in a suburban setting, a stylistic choice that was received by contemporary critics as a sophisticated evolution of the traditional superhero narrative.
