Where it came from
Published in March 1990, Animal Man #21 represents a pivotal moment in the series, arriving during the celebrated run written by Grant Morrison. This particular issue marks the conclusion of a metafictional narrative arc where the protagonist, Buddy Baker, confronts his own creator. The story emerged from a broader industry trend of the late 1980s and early 1990s, where writers began deconstructing the superhero archetype and exploring the boundaries between the writer, the character, and the reader.
The interior art was provided by Chas Truog, with cover illustration by Brian Bolland. Bolland’s work is noted for its meticulous detail and psychological depth, often contrasting sharply with the shifting, surreal nature of Morrison’s scripts. The issue was received by critics as a landmark achievement in subversive storytelling, cementing Animal Man’s status as a cult favorite that pushed the formal possibilities of the comic book medium.
