Animal Man #22

Published in 1990, Animal Man #22 represents a pivotal moment in Grant Morrison’s acclaimed run on the series. At the time, DC Comics was experimenting with more mature, meta-fictional storytelling, and this issue served as part of a narrative arc that challenged the nature of the superhero medium itself. By centering on Buddy Baker, an C-list hero grappling with his existence, Morrison utilized the character to explore themes of animal rights, existential dread, and the relationship between comic book characters and their authors.

The interior art was provided by Chas Truog, whose grounded, realistic style helped anchor the series' increasingly surreal plot developments. The cover, featuring striking imagery, was illustrated by Brian Bolland, a legendary artist whose work defined much of DC's aesthetic during this era. The series was met with significant critical praise, often cited by fans and scholars alike as a foundational text for the 'British Invasion' of American comics, effectively blending superhero tropes with high-concept postmodern philosophy.
