Animal Man #86

Animal Man issue 86, released in 1995, arrived during a transitional period for DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. Following the highly acclaimed run by Grant Morrison that redefined the character as a self-aware, metafictional entity, the series continued to explore the boundaries of comic book storytelling and character identity. This issue is part of the ongoing narrative that saw Buddy Baker grappling with his powers and his place in a complex, shifting DC universe, maintaining the darker, more introspective tone that the title became known for in the mid-nineties.

The issue was illustrated by Steve Pugh, a long-time contributor to the series whose visceral, realistic, and occasionally surreal art style became synonymous with Animal Man's later Vertigo years. Pugh’s approach was instrumental in grounding the character's bizarre transformations and existential dilemmas, ensuring the visual language of the book matched its complex, often unsettling scripts. While early runs are often cited for their subversive nature, the mid-run issues like this one are appreciated by collectors for their consistency in artistic vision and their role in cementing the legacy of Buddy Baker as a cornerstone of mature-reader superhero fiction.
