Animal Man: Deus Ex Machina #1

Animal Man: Deus Ex Machina was published in 1990 as the conclusion to Grant Morrison's seminal run on the Animal Man series for DC Comics. The issue serves as a metafictional exploration of the relationship between a creator and their fictional characters, famously featuring a direct encounter between the protagonist, Buddy Baker, and Morrison himself. This narrative choice was intended to challenge traditional comic book storytelling conventions and explore themes of suffering and agency within the medium.

The art for this final installment was provided by Chas Truog and Doug Hazlewood, who maintained the grounded, realistic aesthetic established throughout the run. Morrison’s direction aimed to provide a sense of closure while simultaneously deconstructing the concept of the comic book hero. The issue was received with critical acclaim for its daring narrative structure and remains a defining moment in modern comic book history, marking a shift toward more experimental, self-reflective storytelling in mainstream superhero comics.
