Where it came from
Aquaman #22, published by DC Comics in July 1965, arrived during the Silver Age of comic books when the character was enjoying a creative surge under the stewardship of writer Jack Miller and artist Nick Cardy. This period was defined by the expansion of the hero's mythos, moving beyond simple underwater adventures to incorporate more complex sci-fi elements and deeper lore regarding the kingdom of Atlantis, which was central to the creative direction of the era.
Nick Cardy's cover art for this issue is frequently cited by collectors for its dynamic composition and expressive character work, hallmarks of his definitive run on the title. The issue reflects the editorial ambition of the mid-1960s to solidify Aquaman as a pillar of the DC Universe, leaning into the vibrant, high-concept visual style that characterized the publisher’s output before the more grounded tonal shifts of the following decade.
