Barb Wire: Ace of Spades #1

Barb Wire: Ace of Spades #1 was published in 1996 by Dark Horse Comics under their Comics Greatest World imprint. The series arrived during the height of the mid-1990s 'bad girl' comic trend, featuring a high-octane mercenary character set in the gritty, dystopian landscape of Steel Harbor. This specific title was intended to capitalize on the character's burgeoning popularity following her earlier appearances and a feature film adaptation released around the same time.

The issue was illustrated by Dan Lawlis, who utilized the bold, muscular art style characteristic of the era to emphasize the protagonist's tough-as-nails persona. The creative direction aimed to blend elements of noir, science fiction, and action-oriented storytelling. While the character attained a notable degree of cult visibility in the mid-nineties, the series was received primarily as a quintessential product of the late-twentieth-century independent comic boom, noted more for its aesthetic contributions to the period than for shifting industry standards.
