Bärenzahn #3

Bärenzahn, or Bear's Tooth, is a historical graphic novel series created by the French writer Yann and illustrator Alain Henriet. The series is set against the backdrop of the Second World War, focusing on an intricate, sprawling narrative involving three childhood friends—a German, an American, and a Polish woman—whose lives are entangled in the aerial warfare and intelligence operations of the conflict. The third volume, released in 2014, continues this trajectory, diving deeper into the technical aviation details and the moral complexities faced by the protagonists as the war intensifies.

The visual identity of the series is rooted in the tradition of realistic Franco-Belgian comics, specifically the 'ligne claire' and aviation-focused styles popularized by artists like Georges Remi. Henriet’s approach to Bärenzahn was intended to provide a cinematic, immersive experience, heavily emphasizing the engineering accuracy of the aircraft and the grim, desaturated atmosphere of the war-torn era. Upon its release, the series was well-received by critics and readers alike for its balanced blend of historical research and the personal, often tragic, human drama that drives the overarching plot.
