Where it came from
Barb Wire: Ace of Spades #2 was published in 1996 by Dark Horse Comics under their Comics Greatest World imprint. The series was designed to expand the narrative of the titular bounty hunter, a character who debuted during the 1990s boom of independent action-oriented heroines. This specific iteration sought to ground the character in a gritty, high-stakes aesthetic that characterized much of the publisher's output during that era.
The character was created by Chris Warner, who leaned heavily into the visual tropes of the decade by emphasizing tactical gear and a noir-inspired underworld setting. The series was received as a stylistic exercise in the 'bad girl' comic trend of the mid-nineties. It functioned as an extension of the broader Steel Harbor shared universe, aiming to provide readers with a visceral, fast-paced alternative to traditional superhero archetypes.
