Where it came from
Beauty and the Beast #3 was published by Marvel Comics in 1985 as part of a four-issue limited series. This title emerged during a period in the mid-1980s when Marvel experimented with diverse genres and romance-focused narratives outside of their traditional superhero team-up formats. The series focuses on the unlikely partnership between the X-Men's Beast and the mutant Dazzler, framing their dynamic within a blend of action, social commentary, and theatrical performance.
The series was written by Ann Nocenti, a prominent voice at Marvel during this era, and featured artwork by Don Perlin. Nocenti utilized the series to explore the intersection of celebrity culture and the prejudice faced by mutants, aiming for a narrative that balanced personal vulnerability with public scrutiny. While the series maintains a niche following today, it is often cited by fans for its unique tonal shift compared to the broader X-Men canon of the mid-eighties.
