Bernd das Brot #1

Bernd das Brot #1 emerged from the enduring popularity of the German television character Bernd, a depressed loaf of bread introduced on the KI.KA children's network in 2000. Created by Tommy Krappweis, the character was designed as a subversion of typical children's programming hosts, characterized by his gloomy outlook and catchphrase, 'Mist.' The character gained a cult following among both children and adults, eventually leading to a diverse range of merchandise including comics that expanded upon his nihilistic adventures.

The comic series was crafted to translate Bernd’s deadpan humor and existential dread into a static medium. The visual direction leaned into the absurdist aesthetic established by the television show, utilizing a stark, minimalist style that mirrored Bernd’s own dissatisfaction with his surroundings. Upon release, the publication was well-received by fans of the television show as a faithful extension of the brand, successfully capturing the character's signature comedic timing and cynical charm.
