Box Office Poison #17

Box Office Poison, written and illustrated by Alex Robinson, emerged in the mid-1990s as a quintessential example of the independent comic book movement. Issue 17 serves as a key installment in this sprawling, slice-of-life narrative that follows a group of interconnected friends navigating the complexities of adulthood, artistic ambition, and relationships in New York City. The series was serialized originally as individual issues before being collected into a celebrated omnibus.

Robinson drew significant inspiration from the structure of classic television sitcoms and character-driven literary fiction, aiming to capture the mundane yet poignant rhythms of his generation. The black-and-white, ink-heavy aesthetic emphasizes the character expressions and urban environment. Upon its completion, the series was widely received as a landmark of the medium, winning an Eisner Award and garnering critical praise for its authentic dialogue and emotional resonance.
