Where it came from
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Oz #1 was released in 2001 by Dark Horse Comics as a three-issue miniseries exploring the backstory of Daniel 'Oz' Osbourne. Following the character's departure from the television series, the comic serves as a bridge for his journey through Tibet, aiming to provide context for his struggle with lycanthropy and his quest for self-control after his final appearance on the show.
The series was written by Joss Whedon and Christopher Golden, with artwork provided by Logan Lubell. The creative team focused on a more introspective, character-driven narrative that leaned into the supernatural travelogue aesthetic. While it was produced during the height of the franchise's expanded universe expansion, the miniseries was generally well-received by fans as a faithful continuation of Oz's character arc, maintaining the tone established in the television source material.
