Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in January 1981, Captain America issue 253 arrived during a transitional period for the title. Written by Roger Stern with cover art by Frank Miller and interior art by John Byrne, the issue is perhaps best remembered for its inclusion in the celebrated run that revitalized the character's narrative direction, focusing on grounded, character-driven storytelling that balanced superhero tropes with personal identity.
The issue features an appearance by the iconic villain Baron Strucker, reflecting the editorial push at the time to re-establish Captain America’s rogues' gallery. Frank Miller’s cover design is frequently cited by collectors for its stark, kinetic composition, which exemplifies his influential style during the early 1980s. Upon its release, the issue was well-regarded for the high-caliber creative team attached to the series, cementing its place as a staple of the Bronze Age of comic books.
