Where it came from
Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! #2 was released in 1982 by DC Comics as part of a series intended to inject levity and absurdity into the comic book landscape. The series was born from an idea by Roy Thomas and Scott Shaw, who sought to blend the traditional superhero archetypes of the Justice League with the classic style of anthropomorphic Warner Bros. cartoons, creating a universe where physical laws were secondary to comedic impact.
The art and design were heavily driven by Scott Shaw, whose background in animation significantly informed the dynamic, rubber-hose-style action sequences found throughout the issue. While the series was often viewed as a niche project within DC's broader, more serious continuity, it was received with warmth by readers who appreciated its self-aware humor, meta-commentary, and the innovative way it navigated the conventions of the medium during a time when comics were beginning to skew toward darker, more grounded themes.
