Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! #9

Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! #9, published by DC Comics in November 1982, emerged during a brief but fondly remembered era of offbeat, humor-oriented superhero titles. Created by Roy Thomas and Scott Shaw, the series was designed as a whimsical, Earth-C counterpart to the main DC Multiverse, parodying traditional comic book tropes through a menagerie of anthropomorphic animal characters. This issue is part of the original run that sought to balance traditional heroic narrative structures with the zanier aesthetic of Saturday morning cartoons.

The visual identity of the series was defined by the kinetic and expressive pencils of Scott Shaw, who leaned into the legacy of Golden Age funny animal comics. In this issue, the creative team continued to explore the surreal possibilities of their cast, which featured characters like Pig-Iron and Rubberduck. While the series was never a high-volume blockbuster, it was well-received by readers who appreciated its self-aware humor and its unique position as a lighthearted counterpoint to the increasingly serious tone that began to dominate mainstream superhero comics in the early 1980s.
