Captain Savage #12

Captain Savage and His Leatherneck Raiders debuted in 1968 during a period when Marvel Comics was heavily invested in war-themed titles, building on the publisher's long-standing tradition of combat-focused storytelling. Issue 12 arrived toward the end of the series' short-lived run, representing the gritty, action-oriented tone that characterized the title under the creative direction of writers like Gary Friedrich and artists such as Dick Ayers.

The series was designed to offer a more unconventional, ragtag approach to military heroism, distancing itself from the more traditional war heroes of the era. Despite its attempts to stand out with a distinct ensemble cast, the title struggled to maintain a consistent audience against Marvel's more dominant superhero lines, leading to its cancellation shortly after this issue was published.
