Where it came from
Checkmate #11, published by DC Comics in 2007, represents the midpoint of the second volume of the series. The title emerged from the aftermath of the Infinite Crisis event, tasked with exploring the morality and logistics of a covert international intelligence agency operating within the DC Universe. The series was designed to provide a gritty, political thriller tone that contrasted sharply with traditional superhero narratives, focusing on the team's internal power struggles and ethical compromises.
The issue features scripting by Greg Rucka, a writer widely respected for his work in the spy-fiction and hard-boiled detective genres. The art for this era of the series was largely defined by a collaborative effort to maintain a grounded, cinematic look, reflecting the high-stakes espionage themes Rucka intended to convey. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded by critics for its sophisticated character development and its nuanced look at the complex world of meta-human intelligence.
